Overview
I am a lifelong teacher and learner. I took my first steps into teaching with a Trinity Cert. TESOL in 2005, when I was 20 years old. In January 2019, at the age of 33, I will graduate from Framingham State University with a M.Ed. International Education, with a focus on EAL. I have never stopped developing myself professionally, and will continue to grow and improve as a teacher, striving forward. In the classroom, my education has taught me to always try to keep lessons communicative - interaction is key to development. As such, I employ a variety of methods that encourage this strategy, including cooperative learning, flipped learning, jigsaw reading, Think-Pair-Share. My classes engage students with each other as much as with the teacher. In my experience, students of all ages respond well to this cooperative, student-led style. As students have a more fulfilling experience, my experience as a teacher is likewise more fulfilling. In terms of in-class experience, soon after receiving my Trinity certificate I moved to China and taught there for 5 months before going to university to pursue my personal interest in East Asian politics and culture. I moved to South Korea 18 months after graduating to resume my career as an ESL teacher. I have been teaching in South Korea for 8 years, with the last 3 years as a Visiting Professor at Kangwon National University. My time at KNU has been one of fantastic professional growth, as I have had the chance to teach and develop high-level university curricula not only for conversational EAL, but also EAP, academic writing, public speaking skills, speech and debate, as well as teaching methodology within the English Education department. The latter course allowed me to draw on my own education and experience as a teacher and a student within the British educational system to educate future Korean teachers of English. Education is a career choice. It is one that I have dedicated myself to over 13 years, and for the rest of my professional life. The language classroom offers the most exciting, energetic and rewarding environment for both myself and my students. After 8 years in South Korea, I am looking to move back to China, a country I have had a longstanding interest in. In 2003 I studied a short course in Chinese Mandarin at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. I also spent 5 months teaching in Guangzhou in 2006 and studied in-depth about Chinese culture and politics during my BA. Moving back to China has been a long-term plan of mine and I am eager to immerse myself once again in China as I pursue my career as a teacher.
